Most are made from hand-spun aluminium, while selected brass and copper-bottom versions provide warmer or darker tonal colours. Designed for a secure fit, responsive feel, and stable intonation, Jo-Ral mutes give both ensemble and solo players a clear choice of sounds.Showing 16 of 16 products
Jo-Ral is an American brass-mute manufacturer established by musician Joseph Alessi Sr. with the aim of improving muted tone, response, and intonation. For more than 30 years, the company has produced mutes in the USA, developing designs for orchestral and jazz playing. Many models are formed from hand-spun aluminium, with each shape and material selected to create a particular tonal effect while maintaining an even response across the instrument's register.
Jo-Ral's designs are shaped to preserve an even response and stable intonation while changing the instrument's tonal colour. All-aluminium models generally produce a brighter, more direct muted sound, while brass-bottom versions add warmth and copper-bottom or all-copper designs create a darker, richer character. Neoprene-enhanced composite corks provide a firm grip while resisting drying and brittleness, helping the mute retain a secure fit through regular use. These construction choices allow players to select both the mute style and material that best suit the sound they need.
Whether a piece calls for a piercing edge, a mellow blend, or a quieter practice sound, Jo-Ral gives brass players a purpose-built way to change tonal character without losing control or responsiveness.
